Steering wheel, moving to the right

  • Hi W202-freunde
As you proberbly all know, the steering wheel is offset (about 2cm left) from the middel of the instruments.
Have any of you tried (hopefully with succes) to move it so it is positioned in the middel of the instruments.

  • Hi Margon,

hardly ashamed i have to admit: No, I don't know.

Could you explain me how do you mean this? I can't imagine what you are pointing at.

    Thanks. :)

    with kind regards,

  • Hi JollyRoger
If you sit yourself in the middle of your seat, and looking at the middel of the instrument panel (with the steering wheel in middle position), and then looking at towards the sides of the instruments you will notice that you can see more of left side than the right side.
And further more (as on almost all other brand of car) the steering wheel is closer to you on the right side than on the left side, put in another way, if you imagine a 5m long stick attached to the center of the steering wheel it would not point straight ahead but towards the centerline (or to the right) of your car, But this is harder to do somthing abouth than the offset.
Hope this claryfy what I mean.

  • Yes, thank you. Now I got it.

    But: 8|

I didn't recognize this. I'll check it by possibility. That sounds weird...

  • Whow, that's a hard one, Margon... ;)

I don't think anyone had tried to move the steering column - except Mercedes-Benz in their DTM racing cars. You have to move the whole steering column, including the fixing points. Then you have to re-position the hole in the wall between the motor compartment and the passenger cabin (Spritzwand). And last not least you have to reposition the steering-gearbox. Only the cost of this task would be equal to buying another car where the steering column is perfectly centered... :D

    Never mind,

    Joe

By the way: Did you ever have a seat behind the steering wheel of an Opel Corsa A?

  • Hi Steamjoe
Remembered that it migth be a good ide to look at a drawing on detali.ru, and I think that you might be right, it looks like there is no flexlink (hardy) on the steering coloum on its way to the steering-gerabox (as there is on many cars).
Haven´t driven a Corsa, but a Ford Escort I and that is not so much offset but for sure pointing almost to the rigth side of the car.
